Project overview

As part of a dual-platform engagement with Health Translation Queensland, the Mental Health Workforce Hub was developed alongside the Clinical Trials Hub using a shared design system and component library. This approach enabled strategic and cost-effective development across two distinct but related platforms.

The hub was created in response to a growing workforce crisis in mental health care. Across Queensland and throughout Australia, there is a significant shortfall in trained professionals. From psychologists and mental health nurses to occupational therapists and peer workers, the sector is in urgent need of support.

This platform was designed to inspire new entrants into the mental health field while also supporting existing professionals with resources, information and real-world insights. Its standout feature is a growing library of lived experience stories, offering a candid, personal look at what mental health work truly involves.

Built as part of a broader initiative to strengthen Queensland’s health workforce, this platform complements the Clinical Trials Hub. That companion project supports research teams with step-by-step trial planning and collaborative tools. Explore the Clinical Trials Hub case study.

Key challenges

Interest in mental health careers is increasing, but many people are unsure about what roles exist or what they involve day to day. The disconnect between what someone studies and what they actually do on the job creates friction that can prevent people from entering or staying in the field.

The site needed to address:

  • Limited awareness of the range of mental health career paths
  • Misconceptions about the real-life work involved in those roles
  • Lack of visibility into educational and employment pathways
  • A need for content that was approachable, trustworthy and human

This platform needed to go beyond information and become a tool for inspiration, clarity and decision-making.

Our approach

As with the Clinical Trials Hub, we began with a strong foundation in research and discovery. We conducted in-person stakeholder workshops in Brisbane, engaging a diverse range of contributors including current mental health workers, educators and students.

These sessions helped us map key user journeys and personas, uncovering the motivations, uncertainties and informational gaps that shaped our content and design. We prioritised inclusivity, simplicity and authenticity at every stage of the process.

Key strategies

To deliver a meaningful, user-first experience, we focused on:

  • Human-centred storytelling
Real lived experiences are placed at the heart of the site to bring clarity and relatability to each career path
  • Clear career mapping
Profession pages link directly to training requirements, pathways and day-to-day realities of the work
  • Smart reuse of systems
The project was built using the same modular block library as the Clinical Trials Hub to increase efficiency and reduce cost
  • Editor flexibility
Internal teams can update and grow the platform with ease through a highly adaptable content management setup
  • Purposeful UX
Clean design, intuitive navigation and focused content help users find their path quickly and confidently

The solution

The final platform is an inviting and informative space where people can explore mental health careers at their own pace. Whether someone is curious about becoming a peer support worker or already studying to become a psychologist, the site provides valuable insight and guidance.

Key features include:

  • Profession profiles that clearly outline role requirements, responsibilities and pathways
  • Personal stories that reflect a wide range of mental health experiences
  • Easy navigation that supports exploration by role, topic or qualification level
  • Scalable content structure designed to grow with community and sector input
  • Fully accessible and responsive design, performing seamlessly on all devices
