GEO Audit
The AI Visibility Scorecard

A generative engine optimisation (GEO) audit built specifically for Australian research organisations, universities, and NFPs.

We identify exactly why your content isn’t showing up in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews, and what to fix first.

The Shift

Discovery has moved.
Here’s how fast.

Whether someone is typing into Google or asking ChatGPT, they’re increasingly getting an AI-generated answer, not a list of links to choose from.

That answer either includes your organisation, or it doesn’t.

Brands cited inside AI answers receive 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks than brands that aren’t cited.

In a zero-click world, being in the answer isn’t a bonus.

It’s the whole game.

69%

of Google searches now end without a single click to any website

60%

of U.S. search results now show a Google AI Overview at the top

93%

zero-click rate in Google’s AI Mode — virtually no one clicks through

THE PROBLEM

So why our organisation
isn’t showing up in AI answers?

It’s almost never a content quality problem.

Most research organisations, universities, and NFPs have strong, credible content. The issue is structural: AI tools don’t browse the web the way humans do. They work from structured data, entity relationships, and content signals that tell them who you are, what you do, and why you’re credible.

If those signals are weak, inconsistent, or missing, your organisation doesn’t appear in AI-generated answers, regardless of how good your actual work is. That’s a fixable problem, once you know exactly where the gaps are.

That’s exactly what the AI Visibility Scorecard tells you.

Your research or expertise isn’t being cited by AI tools

Even though you’re a recognised authority in your field, ChatGPT and AI Overviews are citing other sources (often less authoritative ones) instead.

Who is your audience?

You’re not sure if your site is even accessible to AI crawlers

Some common platform configurations actively block AI bots without anyone realising it. Your content may be invisible before it’s even evaluated.

90-days-bug-fixing

Your leadership team is asking questions you can’t yet answer

“Are we doing enough for AI discoverability?” You need a clear, honest answer backed by evidence, not assumptions and guesswork.

THE AI VISIBILITY SCORECARD

AI Audit Checklist.
One clear picture.

We audit your digital presence across ten generative engine optimisation (GEO) signals.
The same signals that determine whether LLMs treat your organisation as a credible,
citable source worth including in their answers.

AI Bot Access

Can AI crawlers actually reach your site? We check robots.txt, crawl rules, and common misconfigurations that silently block generative engine indexing.

Organisational Schema

Does your site include a complete, well-structured Organisation schema with founding year, topics covered, key relationships, and verified identifiers?

Knowledge Panel & Wikidata

Does your organisation have a Google Knowledge Panel? A Wikidata entry? Do they contain accurate, consistent information that aligns with what your site says?

Topic & Service Schema

Are your key research areas, programs, or services marked up with structured data so AI can understand what you offer and how it connects to your organisation?

People & Author Authority

Are your researchers, academics, or spokespeople recognised as named entities with verifiable credentials? Author authority is a significant AI trust signal.

Entity Consistency

Is your organisation described identically everywhere it appears: your site, Wikipedia, LinkedIn, academic databases? Inconsistency confuses AI about who you actually are.

Content Structure for LLMs

Are your pages structured with clear headings, direct answers, FAQ patterns, and short paragraphs that LLMs can parse as discrete, quotable chunks of information?

Citation & Authority Profile

Who is citing you, and how often? We review your external citation landscape and identify where domain authority is, or isn’t, flowing to your organisation.

Internal Linking & Content Clusters

Does your internal linking structure signal clear topical relationships between your content, or is it scattered in a way that prevents AI from understanding your expertise?

Site Hierarchy & Structure

Does your site architecture reflect your organisational hierarchy in a way that makes sense to both human users and AI systems trying to understand your structure?

What the AI Visibility Scorecard actually involves

Practical questions about what’s included, how it works, and what you can expect when you engage Marameo to run your GEO audit.

A full audit across ten GEO checkpoints: covering AI bot access, organisational and topic schema, Knowledge Panel status, author authority, entity consistency, content structure for LLMs, citation profile, internal linking, and site hierarchy. You receive a graded scorecard for each checkpoint, a prioritised recommendation roadmap, a plain-language findings document, and a 60-minute walkthrough session to go through everything together.

The Scorecard is delivered within 1 week of sign-off and receipt of access to any required analytics. Complex or multi-entity engagements are scoped individually, but we always provide a clear timeline before you commit to anything.

No, and we won’t pretend otherwise. No one can guarantee that, and you should be sceptical of anyone who claims otherwise. What we can do is identify every structural barrier and opportunity gap in your current setup, prioritise what to address, and give you the tools to track improvement over time. AI visibility builds gradually, it’s not a switch you flip.

The audit is a standalone service and the findings are yours to take wherever you need them. Some recommendations you’ll be able to act on internally; others will need technical or content support. We can help with implementation if you want to continue working together, but there’s no obligation attached to the audit itself.

Absolutely. A website rebuild improves many things, but GEO-specific gaps, like schema markup, entity consistency across external platforms, content structure for LLMs, Knowledge Panel accuracy, aren’t automatically addressed in a standard build. If your brief didn’t specifically include GEO infrastructure, there’s a good chance there are gaps worth knowing about.

A standard SEO audit focuses on keyword rankings, backlink profiles, page speed, and technical crawlability for search engines. This audit focuses specifically on how generative AI tools, like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews understand, trust, and cite your organisation. The signals are different, the tools are different, and the recommendations are different. There is some overlap, but they’re not the same problem.

Yes, that’s the whole point of how we structure the output. Every finding is written in plain language with a clear explanation of why it matters, not just what it is. The walkthrough session is specifically designed to make sure you leave with a clear picture and a plan, not a list of technical terms to Google later.

Brand new websites with minimal published content as there’s not enough to audit meaningfully. Organisations looking for guaranteed outcomes: we can’t promise specific AI citations, and we won’t. Organisations looking only for implementation rather than a strategic audit, though the audit is usually the natural first step in that conversation anyway.

What is generative engine optimisation, and why does it matter?

These are the questions people ask when they’re first trying to understand the shift from traditional search to AI-powered discovery, and what it means for their organisation.

Generative engine optimisation, GEO for short, is the practice of structuring your digital presence so that AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google’s AI Overviews can discover, understand, and cite your organisation in their generated answers. Unlike traditional SEO, which focuses on ranking in a list of links, GEO focuses on being mentioned, summarised, and recommended when someone asks an AI a question relevant to your work.

Usually one or more of these reasons: AI crawlers can’t access your content due to technical misconfigurations; your organisation isn’t established as a recognised entity in structured data and knowledge bases; your content isn’t formatted in a way that LLMs can easily extract and cite; or your external citation profile is weaker than your actual authority deserves. A GEO audit identifies which of these applies to you specifically.

They overlap but serve different purposes. Traditional SEO optimises for ranking in a list of links on a search results page. GEO optimises for being included in an AI-generated answer, which involves different signals: entity recognition, structured data completeness, content structure that LLMs can parse, and external citation patterns. You can have excellent SEO rankings and still be completely invisible in AI search environments.

AI tools draw on a combination of training data, live web retrieval, structured knowledge bases like Wikidata and schema markup, and authority signals from external sources. They favour content that is clearly structured, directly answers questions, comes from a recognised and consistently described entity, and is cited by authoritative third parties. Organisations with strong structured data and clear entity profiles appear more reliably in AI-generated answers.

Not necessarily. A well-designed, regularly updated website can still be largely invisible to AI tools if the underlying data structure, schema markup, entity consistency, and content formatting aren’t aligned with how generative engines retrieve and cite information. Website quality for human visitors and AI discoverability are related but distinct problems , and many well-resourced organisations are surprised to find significant gaps when they look closely.

Ironically, they often have the most to gain and the most to lose. Research institutions have genuine authority, but that authority is often locked in PDFs, paywalled repositories, or pages with poor structured data. Meanwhile, AI tools disproportionately favour sources that are clearly structured and consistently described. If your expertise isn’t presented in a way AI can read, a less authoritative source with better structure will be cited instead of you.

A quick diagnostic: ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews questions that your organisation should obviously be answering, questions about your research focus, your programs, your expertise. If you’re not being mentioned, or you’re being described inaccurately, you likely have gaps worth addressing. A GEO audit gives you a systematic, evidence-based picture rather than spot-checking individual queries.

The shift is already happening, not coming. Research from UPCEA and Search Influence found that half of prospective students already use AI tools weekly to research programs, while only around a third of institutions have any AI search strategy in place. For research organisations, the question isn’t whether to care about this; it’s whether you want to be ahead of the problem or catching up to it later.
